Portugisiska Neurotic väljer att servera sin dödsmetall i långsamt tempo med låtar som håller sig omkring åttaminuterssnittet. Någon större variation erbjuder de dock ej, och det är svårt att få ut så mycket av den nästan en timme långa debuten The Rebirth Of Sin. Sången är inspirerad från den gamla skolan och är ungefär lika varierande som Chris Barnes lågfrekventa growlande på de tre första Cannibal Corpse-plattorna, fast mera avtrubbad och monoton. Sångens huvuduppgift som bland annat är till för att lyfta upp låtarna och intensifiera musicerandet övergår istället till ett smärre irritationsobjekt efter en tids lyssnande. Som om det inte vore nog har vi också en ganska anonym produktion framför oss. Men smädandet har dock sitt slut här. Gitarristen Ângelo Rodrigues, som även har stått bakom spakarna vid produktionen, har en tendens att överraska med skickligt komponerade riff och stundtals oväntade tempobyten, även om musiken huvudsakligen går i midtempo. Kort sagt en alldeles för lång skiva som skulle må bra av att kortas ner till hälften, alternativt späckas med mer variation och lite högre tempo. Anonymiteten är ett alldeles för uppenbart faktum och jag kan inte tänka mig att det är särskilt många som orkar ända till skivans ändpunkt. This is very modern death metal with a very good sound. The voices are of the growling type that fit really well the music and they add still more aggression to the band. The drums do interesting rhythms and patterns leaving always space for the guitars that are the essential instruments here and that play riffs that are fast with strong emphasis on the heaviness of the rhythms. There is also place for the experimentation in tunes such as “Neurose I” where strange unconventional sounds are used. There are also bass solos which is surprising in this style of music. I must emphasize the good work of the vocalist who not only is very aggressive but knows how to accentuate really well the rhythms that create the band. The sound of this cd is really good and this makes that this album can transmit perfectly all the aggression that the musicians have to the listener. A very violent and interesting album. [top] » Metal.de [Germany] [28/02/2006] www.metal.de Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 6/10 Das Debütalbum "The Rebirth Of Sin" wurde bereits 2003 von der Band selbst aufgenommen, erschien jedoch aufgrund von Problemen mit dem Herstellerwerk erst letztes Jahr. Doch kommen wir nun zur Musik von NEUROTIC. Die Band knallt uns ganz ordentlichen Death Metal um die Ohren, welcher recht anspruchsvoll daher kommt. Die sehr stark tiefer gestimmten Gitarren riffen oft ziemlich straight und rhythmusbetont, um jedoch im nächsten Moment die hohe technische Schule zu bedienen. In Verbindung mit den teilweise melodischen Leads, dem Gitarrensound ansich, den Rhythmuswechseln und dem Gesang wird man sogleich an eine Band erinnert: MORBID ANGEL. Dieser Name steht mit dicken Buchstaben über der Musik von NEUROTIC, die Meister aus Florida hatten einen unüberhörbar starken Einfluß auf diese Gruppe. So zeigt sich der Todesblei abwechslungsreich und qualitativ gut. Allerdings sind NEUROTIC auch nicht gerade die Ersten, welche dem Geist der Death Metal Legende huldigen. Zwar finden sich in einigen Parts auch Anleihen von ganz frühen PARADISE LOST, und einige vertrackte Rhythmen könnten auch von MESHUGGAH stammen. Trotzdem wird es nicht nur mir beim Anhören von "The Rebirth Of Sin" so gehen, dass man stets an MORBID ANGEL oder eine der 1.000 Klone denken muß. Schade eigentlich, denn technisch scheint die Band doch einiges auf dem Kasten zu haben. Leider ist der Sound auch nicht gerade perfekt, für meinen Geschmack ein wenig zu dumpf, und etwas mehr Druck hätte auch nicht geschadet. Die Benotung gestaltet sich hier echt schwierig. Ich vergebe mal vorsichtig 6 Punkte, könnte aber für absolute Todesblei-Fanatiker, welchen fehlende Eigenständigkeit nicht so wichtig ist, auch gut eine 7 wert sein. Derzeit arbeiten NEUROTIC übrigens an einem neuen Album, von welchem ich mir dann etwas mehr erhoffe. [top] » Obsküre [France] [15/02/06] www.obskure.com Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» Il y a plusieurs raisons qui font qu'on pourrait avoir envie de s'intéresser à Neurotic. Ce groupe portugais, avec une pochette et un nom pareils, sort son premier album, et on aimerait sincèrement pouvoir les encourager. Le style pratiqué, un death où perlent quelques reflux old thrash, inattendu au premier abord, n'est pas intrinsèquement dénué d'intérêt lui non plus. Il en découle une atmosphère brutale, grasse et sourde, d'où percent des éclats dissonants dans la veine de ce qu'ont produit des groupes comme Sepultura (« Chaos A.D. »). Mais la mise en œuvre, linéaire et beaucoup trop homogène, s'avère très rebutante. Comme beaucoup trop souvent, les titres se suivent et se ressemblent en n'éveillant que trop rarement un quelconque intérêt chez un auditeur très vite distrait. Si en effet quelques passages sont effectivement attirants, notamment au niveau des solos (« Deformed »), présentant des envolées d'atmosphères en haute voltige menées par la guitare ou même la basse, l'ensemble reste à un niveau bien plus banal. La voix est constante; les riffs, initialement originaux, font à force d'itérations rapidement figure de stéréotype; et la rythmique ne sauve évidemment pas l'album. Ce premier essai n'est donc pas à marquer d'une pierre blanche. L'efficacité qui devrait découler d'un métal aussi physique est annihilée par la redondance. Le syndrome du "CD rayé", qui semble jouer en permanence le même titre, voire carrément boucler au sein du même morceau, est fatal. Espérons donc que Neurotic saura développer ses arguments, car pour l'instant il est plutôt conseillé de passer son chemin. They recorded two demo’s and after that they recorded their debut album in 2003. this album, “The Rebirth Of Sin” was supposed to be released in 2004, but this turned out to be 2005, due to editing problems at the cd factory. Neurotic is under the wings of Dark Music Productions, but as they didn’t want to promote the band in the European underground (as the band states) they sent out some promo’s themselves, and one of those reached us in 2006. Neurotic plays heavy, dragging and pounding mid-paced orientated death metal with a modern, nu-edge to it and an occasional blast beat. Very straight forward and with a dramatic feel for melody Neurotic’s music displays a band that has it’s roots in old school death metal. But certain structures within the songs and the way that the band plays on guitar, for instance, reveals their will to modernize their music. Bands like Fleshcrawl, Total Devastation, Bolt Thrower and Korn come to mind, though one speaks more to your imagination than the other. When you spin this one for the first time, it will sound to you like yet another death metal record. Nice to hear that they keep it low profile, but nothing really more than that, but several spins learn that there’s quite some depth in the songs and that these guys spent quite some time writing their songs, creating interesting musical parts to listen to. Also, the combination of old school with some renewing elements sounds cool, but I do have to mention that they fortunately do not include those too often. It would bring down the power of their music if they would fall into too much neurotic guitar wining. The production is good dark and heavy, the balance between several spheres is good (brutal, dark, tranquil) and the songs are good. It’s kind of a tough album, not really expected with a band name such as Neurotic. I do want to say that some more variation would be nice. Especially the low tuned guitars can give a certain monotony at times, but it isn’t really bothering, as there’s still enough going on. The vocals on the other hand a definitely too monotone. They could use more variation. As the album lasts over 58 minutes and not counting the two instrumental intermezzi, the vocals start to bore me after a while. All in all I think Neurotic delivered a good debut album. Mid-paced death metal with a dark and sort of modern twist. Worth to check out if this is your genre! War dieser Teil Europas seit längerer Zeit metallisch verwaist, kommt nun endlich mal wieder eine coole Promo-CD ins kalte Deutschland geflogen, um dem Hörer eins über die Rübe zu hauen. Mit einer richtig guten Produktion versehen knallt die Mixtur aus größtenteils Morbid Angel und gaaaanz frühen Paradise Lost und alten Gorefest herrlich altmodisch aus den Boxen und haut dem Hörer das im 6. Song (der mit eineinhalb Minuten deutlich unter dem Durchschnitt liegt) thematisierte „Ohropax“ in die Gehirnrinde. Allerdings sind die meist überlangen Songs nicht immer hilfreich, den Tag mit guter Laune zu beenden. Das Material zieht ab und an recht extrem an den Nerven, vor allem die öfter mal auftauchenden monotonen (Doom-)Parts tragen größtenteils zu diesem Fakt bei. Wären manche Songs wie beispielsweise der hammermäßige Opener „Prayers Of Sin“ von 8 auf 5 Minuten und manches Mal die Arrangements etwas mehr überdacht worden, könnte man hier von einem definitiven Death Metal-Hammer sprechen. In Zeiten, in denen Todesmetall-Bands öfter mal auf Groove und/oder Frickelei achten, anstatt gute Songs zu schreiben, tut eine Scheibe wie wie „The Rebirth Of Sin“ mal wieder richtig gut. Their first Demo was recorded in 2001 and was titled "Incognita". Since then they have recorded another Demo, changed their name and released this debut album (the band is currently working on their second album titled "[In]Human"). Some final details regarding this album is the fact that it was recorded back in 2003 and it was supposed to be released in 2004 but found its way to the shops finally in 2005. Music-wise "The Rebirth Of Sin" can be described as U.S. flavored Death Metal, with guttural vocals and low tuned guitars. Speaking about the guitars, I must say that this has to be the strong card of the band. Perhaps Angelo Rodrigues is not a virtuoso guitarist but he manages to nail down some fine riffs along the way. But very good guitar work is not the alpha and the omega in a CD. Some compositions are good but the majority of the material can be considered as colorless, without a personal touch upon it. Luck of identity is definitely a serious problem and the outcome is the minimum endurance in the test of time. The production is quite good, especially if we keep in mind that we are talking about a "home recording". In conclusion I found "The Rebirth Of Sin" to be an average piece of work. The band seems to be in a good direction, but they must definitely work harder in order to obtain a more personal sound. [top] » Metal Perspective [Greece] [16/01/06] www.metalperspective.com Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 6/10 Neurotic perform death metal, and their digitally processed cover artwork plus their name made me think of something else than plain, sheer brutality. I was right, as Neurotic play slow-paced/mid-tempo styled death metal which surely drags influences from bands such as Disbelief and Neurosis on the guitars. Really cool to hear such an attempt, in spite the fact that this total playing time of almost an hour doesn't justify them. "Subliminal" guitars all the way get too boring, the main riffs (although this part is taken by the minimal background aura) are mostly based on rhythmic scratches on the guitar strings that give another edge to the band, there are also some cool bass experimentations in the form of solo fill-ups (unfortunately, it's a bit behind compared to other instruments) and generally the album after the first tracks does not have any other surprises. The flowing energy inside "The Rebirth of Sin" is a sign that the band achieved to organize well a distorted audio surrounding. It is good to go further than stagnate, though, and this neurotic style of death metal is a yet unexplored side of the genre. I can get with more ease to the afore-mentioned bands, so my main difficulty with this Portuguese band is to get into. Some songs are good to listen to, others may get tedious in case you demand your ordinary death metal sniff. I'm familiar with most of the patterns here despite the fact that few in death metal are doing this. It's above the average, future requires more fantasy perhaps? Vor der eigentlichen Kritik der CD aber wieder ein paar Worte vorweg: Es ist nicht verwerflich zu seinen musikalischen Vorbildern zu stehen und es ist auch kein Grund zur Steinigung, wenn man auf einer Platte hört, welche Bands die Musiker gerne privat auflegen. Leider übertreiben es die vier Portugiesen diesbezüglich eindeutig auf "The Rebirth of Sin". Will heissen, man hört die Anleihen an die musikalischen Vorbilder eindeutig heraus. So spürt man permanent den Geist der Florida-Legende Morbid Angel aus den Boxen wabern. Zwar sind die Stücke allesamt nicht von schlechten Eltern, egal ob das abwechslungsreiche "New Human Machine" oder stark groovende "Cannibalistic". Jedoch, es gibt schon Massen an Bands, die sich diesem Sound verschrieben haben. Auch der Verweis, man spiele modernen Death Metal kann ich nicht unbedingt unterschreiben. Die Scheibe tönt erfreulich traditionell daher. Weniger erfreulich ist hingegen der durchweg dumpfe und sehr drumlastige Sound. Wer eine old school Death Metal Party veranstalten will und noch andere Bands als Morbid Angel, Dismember, Immolation und Konsorten auflegen will, der besorge sich "The Rebirth of Sin". Ich für meinen Teil bleibe lieber bei den Originalen. [top] » Supreme Brutality [Dinamarca] [18/12/05] www.supremebrutality.net Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 4/6 According to the info leaflet The Rebirth of Sin is not entirely new as it was recorded back in 2003, but due to various circumstances it didn't get released until this year so Neurotic is currently busy recording the successor to The Rebirth of Sin. Even though the music on The Rebirth of Sin is not exactly new it doesn't sound dated. The music is centred on death metal, modern death metal with a great deal of groove to be exact. The music does occasionally take a little detour which only adds more flavour to the songs. The pace is mostly kept down which gives it a somewhat relaxed feel, but the pace do quicken ever once in awhile adding further to the multiplicity. The album was recorded in the band's own studio by guitarist Ângelo Rodrigues and he has succeeded in giving the music a fairly good sound. The sound is a little dry, but still with a heavy feel. Moreover none of the details seem to get lost in the soundscape which of course is a plus. The Rebirth of Sin is far from groundbreaking, but it definitely have its moments. The songs are skilfully written with plenty of catchy and groove parts. The single biggest minus on The Rebirth of Sin is that some of the songs tend to get a little too long. It's a minor detail, but it does have its effect. I found The Rebirth of Sin to be quite enjoyable and it definitely made me want to hear more from this promising band. [top] » Powermetal.de [Alemanha] [15/12/05] www.powermetal.de Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» Im Beipackzettel zu NEUROTICs "The Rebirth Of Sin" weisen die Jungs persönlich darauf hin, dass ihr Label keine Promos der Scheibe an europäische Webzines verschicken wollte und sie deshalb selbst aktiv wurden. Warum die kleine Plattenfirma ihre Bands dahingehend nicht unterstützt, entzieht sich zwar meiner Kenntnis, unter Verschluss halten muss man das Album aufgrund (vermeintlich) minderwertiger Qualität aber ganz gewiss nicht. Denn der interessante Death Metal mit MESHUGGAH-Einschlag ist alles andere als schlecht. Im Gegenteil: NEUROTIC gehen auf ihrem Debüt-Longplayer technisch versiert, abwechslungsreich und vor allem pechschwarz zur Sache. Die extrem in den Keller runtergestimmten Gitarren werden dabei von kehligen, teilweise an frühe NEUROSIS erinnernden Growls flankiert, was wohl auch klar machen dürfte, dass die Portugiesen "Easy Listening" für 'nen Schokoriegel halten. Der achtminütige Eröffnungstrack 'Prayers Of Sin' verdunkelt dann auch sofort souverän die Sonne und schreit mit seiner Mischung aus Uptempo-Thrash, PARADISE LOST-Harmonien, Thordendal-Riffs und nihilistischem Doom jeglichem Kommerzdenken ein lautes "Fuck off!" entgegen. Das ist zum Einstieg schon mal mehr als ein ordentliches Pfund. Und genauso geht's auch weiter. Denn alle übrigen Nummern nehmen den Faden des Openers gekonnt auf und spinnen das verneinende Konzept konsequent zu Ende. Ganz egal, ob man die Monumental-Brecher 'Deformed' und 'Wicked God (The Rebirth)' oder absolute Nackenknacker wie 'Divine Burning Of Souls' und 'Cannibalistic' (sehr geil!) ansteuert, es geht immer kompetent dunkel zur Sache. Was musikalisch so über fast 60 Minuten seinen extrem düsteren Lauf nimmt, wird parallel auch in den Lyrics mit Vehemenz vorangetrieben: Dem Hörer schlägt der geballte Hass auf Religionen und die ganze abgefuckte Menschheit im Allgemeinen entgegen. Ob man damit letztlich was anfangen kann, dürfte individuell verschieden sein; dass es hundertprozentig zur Musik von NEUROTIC passt, steht jedoch außer Frage. Alles in allem ist "The Rebirth Of Sin" ein wirklich überzeugendes Debüt, das eine ambitionierte Band zeigt, die weiß, was sie tut, coole Songs auffährt und darauf wartet, von euch angetestet zu werden. Portuguese band Neurotic don't spare on the powder when it comes to technical details. The Rebirth Of Sin is the bands' debut and it is released through Nebula Records, a division of the Portuguese label Dark Music Productions. As already mentioned this is death metal were the main focus lays on technical aspects. Very american in its style. Think of early Darkane meeting late Slayer and add some crispy melodic darkness from Death. And it is the parallels to Death that strikes me most, especially the guitar composing combined with the fluid bass lines, always with a touch of melancholy human misery. Most of the music presented on The Rebirth Of Sin goes on in mid tempo parts with several sidelining and various changes in rhythm. The red chord through the music is the excellent heavy riffing from guitarist Angelo Rodrigues and the tremendous work that's carried out on bass by Ino Detelic. But even though the musical knowledge are close to acts of genius it feels like something is missing in this giant monster of sound. Roaring guitars in honour, but I think that the attempt to be varied and diverse sometimes are the exact opposite of the intention. After a while all solos and arrangements gets a bit boring. Which is a shame, cause the music actually are good. In smaller doses. The production made by Angelo Rodrigues himself is a bit too dark and gloomy. The same go for the vocals, a more distinct expression and perhaps a bit lighter voice would fit the music better. To make a long story short, everything feels a bit too much and I think this band would gain a lot if they would decide to keep it more simple. Less transportation parts and shorter songs for example. The running time of the album could be drawn to thirty minutes maximum and this album would actually be better. After the "Incognita demo 2001", "Neurotic demo 2002" they now come out with their first full lenght album "The Rebirth Of Sin". And this awesome record contains a huge dosis of great oldschool deathmetal, brutality and mind ripping killer music. The recordingsound of this album is fucking evil and low guitar and bass sound. Mid tempo deathmetal is what i hear now, this great album has been released in 2004 but the deathmetal these guys play is timeless. I'm sure that i will listen this awesome band also in 2007. The low brutal death is varied wich you can hear in the thirth track " Deformed". btw all the 12 tracks on this album are fucking awesome. It's not to late to get your self a copy of "The Rebirth Of Sin" and decide for your self. [top] » Back to the Grave [30/03/04] www.grave.kom.pt Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 7,5/10 Formerly known as BREAKDOWN, NEUROTIC were summoned in 1999 and have ever since kept the original line-up, which has largely contributed for the band's cohesion. And the band line-up is, according to the press release and information on the album, Ângelo Rodrigues [guitar], Ino Detelic [bass & vocals], João Guerreiro [vocals] and Marco Reis [drums]. The first time I looked at the promotional pack [in which the band has invested significantly, particularly in their care for a decent presentation: hand-printed colour cover and back cover with excellent quality, careful design, a complete press release, etc.], the cover brought me back memories of ‘ancient times' when THE FIRSTBORN released The Rebirth of Evil, for the graphics were somewhat similar - and the title consequently took this impression further. However, musically there is not much resemblance - in fact, there is no resemblance at all. The Rebirth of Sin starts off with Prayers of Sin, which also happens to be one of my favourite tracks, for its variation, speed and heaviness. The more I listen to The Rebirth of Sin, the more I detect some NEVERMORE-inspired ambiences [Dreaming Neon Black era], especially in the guitars and rhythmic variations [whether in Prayers of Sin or in Dark Light]. The band's music, chiefly characterised by metal heaviness with good rhythmic variation and a powerful drummer, also evokes old FEAR FACTORY, but that is only an approximation for you to have an idea. It is not about cloning or copying. They are NEUROTIC and their music is their own. And they are distinctly DEATH METAL to the bone! That includes the beautiful solo on New Human Machine, the brief MORBID ANGEL-like beginning of Deformed and many other peculiar aspects to the album. The only setback is the lack of variation in the vocal register, which might indulge to tediousness every now and then. The average track is 4-5 minutes, and this includes the many 7-8 minute long anthems. Each song is therefore an episode in complexity. As far as production goes, the band themselves have arranged their sound and it is notorious their [Ângelo's] knowledge in this field. He seems to know what he is doing, for he has managed to capture a powerful, replenished sound with clearly perceptible individual instruments and the necessary amount of heaviness. As producers, NEUROTIC have passed the test and, as musicians, they have certainly surpassed expectations, bringing together DM, technique and quality without much effort. O seu estilo é na sua essência um Death Metal pesado e mid-tempo, com um som bem "gordo", asfixiante e muito denso. Detectam-se toques de Morbid Angel e até bandas de outros estilos como Nevermore ou Machine Head. No geral, a qualidade é excelente, havendo no entanto espaço para melhorar em alguns campos, como na voz, onde o cavernosamente poderoso João Guerreiro só tinha a ganhar com alguma injecção de variedade, ou na produção, onde um produtor mais conceituado poderia aumentar em muito o poder de agressão. [top] » Armageddon [03/09/05] www.armageddon.com.sapo.pt Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 8/10 Após o lançamento do demo cd "Incognita" em 2001 (ainda com a designação de Breakdown), e do demo "Neurotic" composto por três músicas já com a designação actual, chega-nos finalmente em 2004, o álbum de estreia desta banda Algarvia de extrema qualidade. O estilo praticado pelos NEUROTIC é death metal moderno, pesado e agressivo, com algumas influências de thrash ou mesmo grind, lembrando SEPULTURA mais antigo, e os primórdios de FEAR FACTORY. O álbum conta com doze malhas, entre as quais as três músicas (regravadas) da demo homónima anterior, e conta também com um grafismo bastante apelativo, e apropriado ao som da banda. As músicas geralmente são lonas, três delas são instrumentais, e a última faixa serve de separador. A voz está deveras brutal, e lembra-me o Burt C. Bell (Fear Factory) na altura do primeiro álbum Soul of a New Machine, o trabalho de guitarra e baixo está excepcional, e a bateria por vezes é super acelerada, e muito bem conseguida. Apesar do disco ser gravado no seu próprio estúdio (LAC), conta com uma boa qualidade sonora, e um som limpo. "Dark Light (Bright Shadow)" é um tema instrumental onde mostra o lado mais melódico da banda, contrariamente de "Ohropax", que mostra o outro lado dos NEUROTIC, o lado mais agressivo e extremo. O destaque vai para "Prayers of Sin", "New Human Machine", e os temas regravados do demo anterior, são eles "Deformed", "Wicked God" e "Cannibalistic". Depois de todos estes anos – desde 1999 – souberam tirar proveito de uma união sóbria e coesa, como revelam estas dez malhas de death metal, que estão claramente ao nível do que se vai fazendo lá por fora. O quarteto remonta a 1999, ainda com o nome Breakdown, e sob ele gravaram a demo "Incognita". Em 2002 gravam uma demo de 3 temas a passam a ser conhecidos por "Neurotic", trazendo-nos, no ano seguinte, este "Rebirth of Sin". Estamos perante um moderno álbum de deathmetal pesado com todo o seu ambiente negro à volta. Não é das coisas mais rápidas que por aí andam dentro do mesmo género, mas posso dizer que é rápido q.b, e que esta rapidez se une bastante bem aos riffs arrastados e harmoniosos. Uma coisa que tem de se salientar é a técnica que revelam através dos trabalhados riff's na guitarra e baixo. A voz, profunda e arranhada, surge-nos das entranhas com toda a naturalidade, manifestando a sua agressividade. O conjunto de todos estes elementos resulta numa sonoridade bastante original que penso ser característica da banda. Na minha opinião, apenas falha a duração dos temas, algo longos, tornando-se, por vezes, um bocado cansativo, mas é apenas o meu gosto pessoal. Gosto ainda bastante de todo o lay-out do cd, a cargo da SpoonArt Communications, bastante escuro e "moderno". Penso que dá logo a imagem do que vem aí. Neste campo, a Música, ex-equo com a Literatura, reserva para si uma boa parte do protagonismo. Na génese do fenómeno está a democratização das novas ferramentas tecnológicas, que dotou os músicos amadores dos recursos necessários à auto-produção [através de software e hardware destinado à gravação, produção e mistura de faixas], distribuição [via MP3], reprodução [doméstica, no caso das maquetas, com drives de CD-R] e promoção [Web, newsgroups, correio electrónico], como forma de contornar as habituais dificuldades na obtenção de um contrato discográfico. É nesse espírito do it yourself que a carreira dos Neurotic [e de tantas outras bandas] assenta. Anteriormente conhecido como Breakdown o quarteto formou-se em 1999 em Lagos, no Algarve, tendo chegado a registar as maquetas Incognita, em 2001, e Neurotic [já sob a actual designação], no ano seguinte. The Rebirth of Sin, o álbum de estreia, surge em 2003 e visa essencialmente atrair a atenção das editoras. O que não será difícil [esperamos nós!], dada a qualidade do material. Gravado, produzido e misturado pelo guitarrista e compositor Ângelo Rodrigues nos estúdios LAC, The Rebirth of Sin é um dos álbuns mais arrasadores e geniais que me foram dados a ouvir no período mais recente. O Death Metal moderno, balançado e pesadão emitido pelas colunas resulta essencialmente de uma produção esmagadora e do som asfixiante da guitarra de sete cordas que Rodrigues não dispensa. Breves apontamentos Thrash e Grind enriquecem ainda mais as canções. Senhores de uma técnica invejável, os músicos surpreendem-nos a cada tema. Grunhidor nato, João Guerreiro vocifera as letras directamente das entranhas, ao passo que Rodrigues se revela um guitarrista-ritmo como há poucos. Os solos de baixo em «Deformed» - recuperado da maqueta Neurotic, tal como «Wicked God» e «Cannibalistic» - e «Prayers of Sin» ilustram bem a mestria de Ino Detelic, acompanhado pela bateria avassaladora de Marco Reis. Estes Neurotic tocam um Death Metal bem brutal mas mais mid-paced que o que normalmente se poderia esperar deste estilo. É claro que não deixa de ter os seus blast beats ou mesmo outras partes mais arrastadas. A primeira coisa que se nota no começo do álbum é a sua produção bastante "abafada". Felizmente uma produção perfeita ou mais cristalina não é propriamente um requisito obrigatório para este tipo de som que, de qualquer modo, não deixa de ser apreciável. Com o hábito, por volta da segunda faixa, já se torna num aspecto quase secundário. O pior é que não trazem nada de propriamente inovador e isso aliado a músicas um pouco longas (principalmente as iniciais) torna o trabalho um pouco cansativo. Mostram contudo alguns momentos de bom gosto e de bons músicos que são. Como é o caso da malha de guitarra seguida de um solo de baixo em "Deformed". O álbum conta ainda com quatro pequenas faixas instrumentais, duas das quais acabam o cd. Concluindo, creio que os Neurotic poderiam beneficiar com uma produção melhor e talvez com alguma maior variedade e objectividade no trabalho. [top] » MetalOpenMind [07/11/2003] www.metalopenmind.com Neurotic «The Rebirth of Sin» 7/10 Há uns mêses atrás tínhamos falado da primeira demo dos Neurotic a dar a conhecer algum de seu trabalho que agora surge em versão alongada e mais uma vez de forma totalmente independente. Na verdade «Rebirth of Sin» foi gravado nos estúdios da própria banda [LAC] e inclui os 3 temas da demo alinhados entre mais 8 "novas" composições [aquele som esquisito na faixa final "Neurose" não conta], todas elas contando com um mesmo nível de composição, interpretação, gravação e produção. O guitarrista Ângelo Rodrigues é aqui o responsável pela sonoridade potente e por vezes claustrofóbica dos Neurotic. Seus riffs são cortantes, utiliza algumas dissonâncias e não prescinde de solos eficazes, mas há que dizer que há pouca variação no timbre dos acordes. Da primeira a última música a guitarra soa sempre à mesma, o que se por um lado cria uma personalidade própria à sonoridade da banda, por outro lado o som tende a ficar um pouco monótono, principalmente se tivermos em consideração que ainda não houve grandes melhorias a nível vocal. Continuo a achar que se houvesse mais variação nesse campo, os Neurotic seriam provavelmente a melhor banda thrash poderoso de Portugal.... Claro que Max dos Sepultura [uma das maiores referências aqui presente] também não variava muito no princípio de carreira, e mesmo assim conseguiu chegar onde está hoje, por isso vamos ver como é que o público vai reagir à performance ao vivo da banda. Como sabem, foi na estrada que os Sepultura ganharam o respeito do público, a comunicação em cima de um palco também conta muito. É tudo uma questão de aguardar e ver como é que as coisas funcionarão ao vivo. Dos temas adicionais à demo é impossível não referir o tema de abertura "Prayers of Sin" que com seus mais de 8 minutos de duração resume bem o teor de devastação sonora semi-apocalíptica que este quarteto sulista debita sem dó nem piedade do primeiro ao último minuto deste cd. A secção rítmica é coesão pura, o batera por exemplo é uma verdadeira máquina, realmente impressionante. Uma banda que promete e que merecia ver seu álbum relançado de forma alargada por alguma editora competente no meio underground. Todavia, um pouco mais de agressividade não lhe ficasse mal. Em termos vocais, parece que somos atirados para a beira de um precipício, apenas com o poder de uma palavra proferida. [top] » MetalOpenMind [01/05/2003] www.metalopenmind.com Neurotic «Neurotic» 7/10 Aos primeiros acordes de «Wicked God», o tema de abertura desta maquete em cd, fiquei com a idéia que estava diante de uma banda nu-metal... não poderia estar mais enganado ! Os Neurotic já existem a alguns anos na forma dos Breakdown, e só com esta nova demo de 2002 que assumem definitivamente a nova designação. A formação mantém-se inalterada desde sempre, o que se nota pela tremenda coesão entre os músicos e principalmente pela sólida secção rítmica. Após algumas audições destes 3 temas, fica claro que o metal praticado pelos Neurotic está mais para um Sepultura da fase «Schizophrenia» até «Arise» do que para qualquer outra sonoridade mais moderna. Um ataque sonoro sem piedade, sem concessões, do tipo barreira sonora intransponível é o que mais se destaca neste trabalho. No tema «Deformed» temos um bem colocado solo de baixo como destaque, e no tema «Cannibalistic» temos alguns apontamentos interessantes no trampo da guitarra e mudanças rítmicas ao nível de bandas de primeiro escalão. Temas longos e bem trampados, vocais agressivos e quase cavernosos [talvez o ponto mais negativo devido a pouca variação vocal] e uma produção acima da média fazem desta proposta um bom indício do que ainda está por vir na carreira deste jovem quarteto português. Para finalizar um pequeno conselho: Valorizem ao máximo o vosso trabalho, não se deixem levar pela idéia errada de tocar de "borla" apenas pela divulgação. [top] » Guardians Of Metal [Fevereiro/Março 2003] Breakdown «Incognita» 7/10 Oriundos do Algarve, os BREAKDOWN gravaram 10 temas e ainda juntaram mais 4 temas gravados ao vivo num concerto que deram em Beja. A produção apesar de caseira é tão boa ou melhor que a de muitas bandas portuguesas que gravam em estúdios ditos "profissionais" e é suficientemente nítida para se perceber que estamos perante mais uma boa banda portuguesa, a enveredar pelos caminhos daquilo a que se pode rotular "Modern Thrash-Metal", demonstrando influencias obvias de SEPULTURA, MACHINE HEAD E FEAR FACTORY entre outras bandas americanas do género, só lhes falta mesmo um produtor como o Colin Richardson, que consiga captar toda a energia e raiva que a banda demonstra ao vivo.
